Theft of catalytic converters is a growing problem. The lack of an identifiable victim challenges police in solving these crimes. To help curb catalytic converter theft, BARCC is partnering with local automotive businesses throughout the BARCC region.
Engraving Initiative
Upon request, participating businesses can offer to:
- Engrave your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) onto the converter
- Mark the catalytic converter with high-heat paint
This FREE service can act as a theft deterrent, assist police when tracking stolen converters, and help charge criminals!

What is a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants found in internal combustion exhaust gas. This device is part of the exhaust system under a vehicle and is located between the engine and muffler.
Why are catalytic converters targeted for theft?
Catalytic converters contain precious metals that are expensive and can sell for several hundred dollars. This type of theft has increased across Alberta in recent years.
Ways to prevent catalytic converter theft
To avoid becoming a victim of catalytic converter theft, consider the following:
- Ask your mechanic to engrave the last 8 digits of your VIN on your catalytic converter. The etching of catalytic converters can assist the RCMP with its investigation if the it is stolen and recovered.
- Park in a garage when possible.
- Park in an area covered by surveillance video.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Alarm systems can be calibrated to activate upon vibration.
- Security devices are available to attach to your catalytic converter to make it more difficult to remove.
Reporting catalytic converter theft
Even if your converter is not engraved, reporting stolen converters is always a good idea. If you see suspicious activity, such as hearing sawing or grinding noises at night, or witness a crime in progress, call 911 immediately. To report a catalytic converter theft that is not currently in progress, call the Barrhead RCMP at 780-674-4848.
